How to Telework Efficiently

Effective telework relies on several key elements including:
    •    A safe alternative work environment
    •    Reliable communication methods (such as email and telephone)
    •    Remote access to your organization’s IT infrastructure
    •    A system ensuring the security of work information
    •    Support from your manager and organization

How to Work from Home:

As an effective teleworker your time management skills will be critical. Planning your workload, measuring how you spend your time, reviewing your list of daily ‘to-dos’ and filing your work easily and quickly are all ideas you should considering when engaging in remote work.

Working from an alternate location, such as from home, demands that you handle all distractions by maintaining your focus. Discuss your commitment with your family and friends so that you can establish boundaries. This will allow you to create the necessary balance between personal and work priorities.

Your Home Office

Setting up a home office allows you to concentrate on your work and discourage interruptions. Your focus will be critical.

Your home office needs to be organized; furniture needs to be safe and ergonomically suitable to the tasks of your job, files or office equipment need to be secure and lighting must be appropriate. Consider including some white noise to combat external and distracting sounds.

Be a Part of the Design

As a resilient and successful teleworker you will need to identify challenges quickly and address them constructively. Create a list of these challenges and discuss them with your manager or possibly with other colleagues who face many of the same issues when they work from home.

Be aware of problems such as missed deadlines and procrastination, and redesign your working methods to remedy them.

You will be a role model and a leader. Telework is an evolving design and subject to change and improvement. You have the opportunity to be a part of the design, and your voice will make the initiative better.
